Milan, 10 June 2026 – Fastweb + Vodafone announces the evolution of its FASTCloud platform with the introduction of a new open-source-based architecture designed to strengthen organisations’ sovereignty and prevent technological lock-in.
Fastweb + Vodafone’s cloud strategy, aimed at providing customers with increasing flexibility and technological autonomy by enabling them to choose and integrate the virtualisation system best suited to their needs, is fully aligned with broader European initiatives to strengthen infrastructure capabilities, resilience and technological autonomy across Europe.
The platform represents an enabling infrastructure for customers looking to develop or manage workloads, including AI workloads, within a localised cloud environment that meets governance, security and sovereignty requirements.
The new architecture, based on the open-source OpenStack technology, has been engineered by Fastweb + Vodafone to ensure high standards of security, reliability and operational continuity, while at the same time enabling access to cloud-native solutions qualified in accordance with the guidelines of the Italian National Cybersecurity Agency (ACN) and hosted within proprietary data centres located in Italy.
Built on open and standardised technologies, the new platform expands the options available to organisations by enabling more flexible, modular and technology-independent hybrid and private cloud models. The solution ensures full independence from individual vendors’ roadmaps and licensing models, offering private enterprises and Public Administrations greater control over data, workloads and configurations, all of which remain within proprietary data centres located in Italy.
The launch of FASTCloud Open Source comes just days after the European Commission’s proposal of the Cloud and AI Development Act (CADA), the regulation introducing a unified European framework to assess the sovereignty of cloud services used by businesses and Public Administrations. The CADA explicitly aims to accelerate Europe’s infrastructure capacity, reduce dependence on non-EU providers and ensure that essential public sector functions rely on verifiable and autonomous solutions.
